The first school in Tottenville was located at the corner of Satterlee Avenue and Amboy Road. It was the former Mount Herman Chapel. The building was a tiny building that was once in Richmond Valley and move to Satterlee Avenue and Amboy Road. When it was first move it was used for Sunday school and later as a private school. The school was managed by Mr. Herman Kingsbury and later in time was managed by Mr. Walter T. Elliott. ------------------------------- At the location of the Main Street Apartment buildings there was once a large residence this was a private school managed by Miss. Hamilton. ------------------------------- Years later the first public school was established in a brick building next door to the A&P (On Amboy Road, between Wood and Fisher Avenue). ------------------------------- In 1878 a new public school building was erected as PS2, now PS1, sits on the present site. The building was too small so in 1893 four large rooms were added to the rear of the building and the first High School on Staten Island was organized.
